Nico Thoma’s group combines crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy to study large protein complexes that are implicated in human disease.  Nico’s group has a particular focus on the roles of ubiquitin ligases in DNA repair and chromatin biology.

Nico studied biosynthetic enzymes with Peter Leadlay in Cambridge for his PhD thesis, before post-doctoral periods with Roger Goody and Ilme Schlichting at the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund, and Nico Pavletich at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York.  Nico then joined the Friedrich Miescher Institute in Basel in 2006 as a Junior Group Leader, and was promoted as a tenured Senior Group Leader in 2012.  Nico was elected a member of EMBO in 2015.
